Organization Summary
The Civic Works YouthBuild program engages Baltimore City youth and young adults, between the ages of 16–24, to complete their high school education while earning construction industry-related skills certifications, training, and work experience. Students help construct housing for low-income families and develop leadership, job readiness, and academic skills to support pathways to full-time employment paying a family-sustaining wage. The program offers intensive wrap-around support services to help participants address barriers to success and achieve their education and career goals.
Position Summary
The Construction Supervisor will deliver hands-on construction training, supervise youth and young adult trainees on construction projects, and assist in developing students’ fundamental carpentry skills. The Supervisor will work closely with the Construction Training Manager to plan, implement, and complete carpentry and construction projects while ensuring a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment. The Supervisor will also assist students with career exploration and readiness for construction trades employment.
The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of construction methods, tools, materials, and safety practices, and demonstrate the ability to mentor and motivate young adults.
Responsibilities:
- Hands-on Instruction and Student Training
- Plan and deliver certification-based and hands-on construction skills training for students in field-based and classroom environments.
- Teach fundamental construction methods, including framing, measuring, cutting, and finishing.
- Lead training in safely using hand tools, power tools, and job site equipment.
- Support students’ understanding of construction math and blueprint reading.
- Engage students in discussions of career pathways in the construction trades.
- Reinforce proper safety practices, workplace expectations, and teamwork principles.
- Assist students in preparing for and achieving industry-recognized credentials.
- Project Planning, Execution, and Oversight
- Plan and manage construction and carpentry projects from start to completion.
- Read and interpret blueprints and construction plans to guide project execution.
- Supervise construction activities, ensuring high-quality work and compliance with project timelines and standards.
- Coordinate project logistics, tool needs, and material procurement with the Construction Training Manager.
- Work with prefabricated and conventional construction methods to build or remodel structures.
- Student Supervision and Coaching
- Provide direct supervision of students on project sites, maintaining a positive and safe work environment.
- Model and coach professionalism, teamwork, and work ethic for participants.
- Provide consistent, constructive feedback to students regarding skills development and work performance.
- Support students in overcoming barriers to participation and success through collaboration with program staff.
- Participate in regular team meetings to review student progress and identify supports needed.
- General Program Support
- Ensure all safety standards, OSHA regulations, and Civic Works policies are followed at all times.
- Assist with tool inventory, maintenance, and proper storage.
- Maintain accurate training records and attendance logs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support production and program goals.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Five (5) years of construction experience
- Experience with carpentry preferred
- Familiarity with and ability to use Google Drive, Email, and Calendar applications.
- Familiarity with reading blueprints.
- Experience reading and working from blueprints and technical drawings.
- Prior experience delivering construction skills instruction preferred.
- OSHA 30 certification (or must obtain within 90 days of hire).
- First Aid/CPR certification (or must obtain within 90 days of hire).
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong carpentry skills, including framing, finish work, drywall, and minor electrical or plumbing preferred.
- Ability to teach and demonstrate construction techniques to learners with varying levels of experience.
- Ability to maintain a safe, respectful, and motivating environment for young adults.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to model patience, resilience, and professionalism in dynamic environments.
- Physical ability to perform construction tasks including lifting 60 pounds, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
- Commitment to supporting workforce development, youth leadership, and career pathways.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and able to drive company vehicles.
