Job Description

The Role

We are seeking a proactive, detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our Material Science laboratory. In this hands-on and strategically important role, you’ll be responsible not only for performing and refining material tests on our self-developed packaging solutions, but also for writing SOPs, validating new test methods, and generating structured documentation that supports our R&D and product development functions.

Our lab is equipped with analytical tools including oxygen and water vapour barrier testers, tensile and heat-seal testing machines, and will continue to expand. You'll also occasionally contribute to the operation and upkeep of our Coatema coating line to ensure high-quality material output.

This role is based at our offices in Holm, near Hamburg.

How you'll help build one•fıve

As a key member of the Material Science team, you will:

  • Plan and conduct testing to characterize  sustainable packaging materials, supporting the R&D and product development teams with reliable data - this will include regular routine testing

  • Write, maintain, and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) and documentation for existing and new testing methods

  • Validate new lab procedures to ensure reproducibility, consistency, and quality of test data

  • Operate and maintain lab equipment, including instruments for oxygen and water transmission, tensile strength, thickness, and surface roughness testing

  • Analyse and document results to support product improvement, material optimisation, and customer-specific requirements

  • Drive data quality and consistency by establishing robust data management practices for test results and reports

  • Collaborate closely with R&D to co-develop testing plans that align with development milestones and innovation projects

  • Support the QA process with reference measurements, calibration routines, and inspection of raw and coated materials

  • Monitor and report on production quality by evaluating coating thickness, adhesion, and material appearance

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and digitalisation of our lab workflows and internal processes

Who you are
  • A trained Laboratory Technician or holder of a B.Sc. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field

  • 2+ years of experience in a lab-based role, preferably within a QA, R&D, or materials testing environment

  • Strong experience in writing technical documentation, protocols, and SOPs

  • Comfortable designing and validating new test methods in coordination with scientific or engineering teams

  • Hands-on experience with analytical lab instruments and sample preparation techniques

  • Data-driven and meticulous, with a strong commitment to precision, repeatability, and quality

  • Familiarity with barrier testing, flexible packaging, coatings, or paper materials is highly desirable

  • Technically curious with a proactive mindset – you enjoy building and improving lab infrastructure and workflows

  • Fluency in English is required; German is a plus
