Job Description

LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) is a high-growth renewable energy company forging a sustainable future through integrity, innovation, and positive impact. We own and operate 30 large wind, solar, and energy storage projects across the United States, totaling over 3 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity.

LRE has an ambitious goal of 10GW of operating assets by 2028 and are developing and contracting an increasing pipeline of new projects every year. Job Summary:

This position is responsible for preparing constraints maps, preliminary site layouts, electrical plans and single line diagrams using CAD software tools.  This position will work closely with the Project Development Engineers and other designers and discipline engineers to accurately and efficiently produce solar, wind, and energy storage plant-related drawings, design details, and exhibits.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and promote LRE’s zero incident safety culture. 

  • Develop and maintain project constraints maps, incorporating the various legal encumbrances, geotechnical, environmental, and natural resources avoidance areas, buffers, and setbacks.  Track and document constraints map source files, project specific setbacks, assumptions, and revisions in an organized manner.  

  • Develop preliminary solar and BESS project layouts, incorporating various project/ site constraints. 

  • Provide site design and preliminary electrical drafting support during project development to support the Development pipeline.   

  • Develop plans and various exhibits to support project development requirements, which may include but not be limited to project siting assessments, land entitlement, development permitting, crossing exhibits, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), and Interconnection applications. 

  • Prepare preliminary electrical AC and DC single line diagrams, general arrangements, and block diagrams.

  • Review ALTA and topographic surveys, and land rights legal descriptions, and reconcile with project constraints map/ project layout. 

  • Perform preliminary grading and earthwork calculations to support the project bidding process.  

  • Prepare material take-offs.

  • Provide various site design and drafting support during project construction to support the on-site construction team as required. 

  • Review and respond to Contractor submittals and Requests for Information, as applicable.   

  • Review consultant’s reports, studies, and design packages for incorporation into constraints maps, technical compliance, constructability, operability, and cost optimization. 

  • Assist in development and/or review of “as-built” construction drawings and CAD files ensuring that the documentation accurately reflects the installed facility and is complete for all project work. 

  • Assist in digital mapping file conversions/ exports, including GIS, Google Earth, and AutoCAD.

  • Contribute to Leeward’s continuous improvement by identifying, actioning, and supporting internal improvement initiatives. 

  • Keep current on technology offerings and suppliers, as it relates to site development and constraints/ requirements. 

  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

  • Direct, mentor, and review work of junior level designers. 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and associate or bachelor’s degree. 

  • Minimum 6-8 years of relevant technical and/or design experience; utility-scale solar power plant design desirable. 

  • Prior experience in preparing PV site layouts, crossing exhibits, AC/DC single line diagrams, bills of materials, etc.

  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil3D software and associated drafting standards and symbols. 

  • Working knowledge or ability to learn PV Design, Plant Predict, PV Case and/or other CAD-integrated PV layout software.  

  • Working knowledge/ experience with GIS data and platforms. 

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.

  • Understanding of survey coordinate systems and how they are used to spatially orient CAD and GIS drawings. 

  • Ability to apply standard engineering principles and practices. 

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and drawings and other common specifications. 

  • Ability to research local/ state requirements as it pertains to land development and renewable plant design. 

  • Basic understanding of civil, electrical, and structural design/ drafting as it relates to renewable energy projects. 

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Notepad, etc. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with internal personnel as well as third party consultants. 

  • Ability to remain focused and reliable in completing tasks and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision. 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities in a complex and dynamic environment. 

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license.
