Wood Mackenzie’s Research

Wood Mackenzie’s research groups provide integrated subscription, research and advisory services to inform and support our client’s commercial and strategic decisions in the complex and rapidly changing energy industry across all sectors of the economy.

Combining our deep knowledge of transport, battery technologies and raw material supply chains with our expertise in power, renewables, storage, fuels, modeling, and emerging technologies like hydrogen and CCUS, Wood Mackenzie can provide data and insight spanning the entire energy value chain. We cover supply chains, technology costs, policy and market issues, fundamentals-based outlooks, scenario modelling, price forecasting, asset valuation, and commodity market landscapes.

Team Profile

This role will serve as part of Wood Mackenzie’s Demand team, in the Commodities segment.  The Commodities segment is central to Wood Mackenzie’s energy and natural resource research, enabling clients across value chains to understand and respond to market and portfolio-related risks. Some of the services we provide include short-term and long-term market research reports, economic benchmarking, and forecasting of energy and natural resource commodity prices.

As a part of the Fundamentals group, the Demand team is growing quickly as we develop more integrated analysis. As part of these efforts, we model full energy and non-energy demand for commodity consuming sectors such as Transportation, Residential / Commercial, Agriculture and Industrials. We interpret policies, assess new technologies and build deployment forecasts to create an underlying view of the adoption of low-carbon alternatives versus traditional fuels. We also provide scenario forecasts to support Wood Mackenzie’s proprietary 2 and 1.5 degree pathways where country level modelling reflects specific pathways on the journey towards net-zero emissions.

Key internal collaborations within Wood Mackenzie are with our expert groups covering upstream, gas/LNG, oil/refining, petrochemicals, steel, metals, power, renewables, hydrogen and CCUS.

Role Purpose

This role will be responsible for building and maintaining the complex data inputs across the suite of new models developed, covering key sectors such as transportation, buildings, industry and power.

In this role, you will be the cross-functional data lead within Demand team. Leveraging your strong data processing skills, you’ll support the development and maintenance of data pipelines for key economic signals, such as buildings datasets, sales and production of new vehicles, energy consumption, and many more series. You’ll work with our data team to create ETL processes which properly capture and validate input datasets while coordinating with sectoral leads to ensure accurate representations of global trends.

As a business enabler, you’ll support the integration of newly developed commodity demand datasets into wider team workflows. This will include creating efficient update processes to support Wood Mackenzie’s energy transition scenarios as well as other research teams like the Power and Renewables group, our Oils team, our Gas team, metals team and more. You will create effective reporting mechanisms (such as PowerBI / other proprietary internal dashboards) to ensure only the most robust views are delivered, with clear assumptions underpinning the outlooks explained through high quality visuals.

You will play a lead role implementing the analytical frameworks for modelling demand and owning the assumptions behind them. By working with both internal and external stakeholders, you will establish a knowledge base to test assumptions against, as well as to represent Wood Mackenzie’s distinguished research in a high-quality way to customers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Source and integrate public and private third-party datasets (e.g. buildings, vehicle sales/production, industrial output)  into new energy demand models
  • Develop data validation processes to maximise data integrity
  • Work with internal data team to lead the development of efficient data pipeline processes
  • Own elements of the assumptions behind the new demand model, particularly as they relate to energy consumption into the buildings sector
  • Support the calibration and tuning of model output to ensure smooth deployment of newly created datasets
  • Leverage your data into regular research content through new and existing customer products
  • Work with the Scenarios & Technologies team to update outlooks for faster transition scenario datasets which feed into our proprietary scenarios coverage
  • Support new analyses with input from key stakeholders across regional and commodity knowledge bases
  • Provide high-quality client service to research subscribers through responding to inquiries, one-on-one conversations, and special events

Knowledge and Experience

  • 3-5 years working with data: expertise building data processes and compelling visuals leveraging tools such excel, PowerBI, and/or Python
  • Experience developing ETL processes and/or reporting tools
  • Previous work or academic experience in commodity markets, covering energy, materials and/or specific demand sectors such as transport, buildings, industry, or power markets.
  • An understanding of emerging energy transition related technologies (nuclear, geothermal, hydrogen, CCUS, biofuels, etc.)
  • Modelling background a plus, with previous work experience supporting new model development highly desirable (e.g. demand forecasting, technology adoption, cost modelling)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Self-driven. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator
  • Strong communication skills; comfortable interacting with internal stakeholders across different time zones and as part of a global team

Key Competencies

  • Data analysis and manipulation
  • Issue identification and problem-solving
  • Planning, implementation
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Personal impact
  • Can work across global teams and timezones
