The Urban Wildlands program works to protect wildlife and habitats vulnerable to unsustainable development while advocating for healthy and climate resilient communities. Attorneys at the Center bring cutting edge cases that are designed to have a conservation impact that addresses key threats to biodiversity. The main duties of this role include impact litigation, policy development, administrative advocacy, and advancing environmental campaigns. The ideal candidate will have excellent research, writing, and public speaking skills with an ability to think strategically and creatively. Staff and Senior attorneys are motivated and use their experience in law and activism to develop cases and win campaigns. The main duties of this role include innovative impact litigation and administrative advocacy, as well as advancing justice-centered campaigns at both the federal and state levels. The attorney will litigate federal and state court and administrative cases, build and maintain effective relationships with partners, conduct media advocacy, and engage the public through campaign activities. POSITION SUMMARY The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, experienced, creative media-relations expert and professional writer to raise the media profile of the Center and our work to clean up oil and gas well pollution, fight the climate emergency and protect our planet. The Center is a leading national voice in the movement to combat oil and gas pollution and hold Big Oil responsible for the harm it’s doing to our climate, oceans, wildlife and frontline communities. Our highly motivated team uses cutting-edge legal, scientific and organizing strategies to tackle the climate crisis and the harms of fossil fuels. We do this at the national and international levels and in California and New Mexico, where we have become a major force in shaping the politics and policies surrounding oil and gas extraction and pollution.The media specialist will pitch journalists and produce high-impact communications aimed at addressing these issues and other Center conservation priorities, including generating media stories, op-eds, editorials and creative media products that drive the national discussion. The specialist will work closely with journalists and Center scientists and attorneys across several time zones, occasionally act as a spokesperson, and drive communications strategies on a daily basis and over the long term. Please note: Some projects will involve morning work in the Eastern time zone.The ideal candidate will have exceptional writing and editing skills, a strong working knowledge of journalism, and a passion for exposing the harms caused by oil industry pollution and driving efforts to clean up oil and gas wells in offshore waters and on public and private land across the United States. Location: Remote; DC, Oakland, Tucson, Portland, or Asheville, NC preferred for ability to work a hybrid schedule. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>Write and edit compelling press releases, op-eds, story pitches, blog posts, reports and other material for the Center’s oil and gas well pollution work and other conservation issues.</li><li>Lead and execute strategies that produce high-impact print, web and broadcast media coverage.</li><li>Cultivate media relationships, pitch stories to reporters and editorial writers, and continually seek out new media opportunities.</li><li>Manage, plan and help execute rapid responses to breaking news.</li></ul><ul><li> Work with program staff and the media director, deputy media director and chief editor to manage the flow of copy (including press releases) through the editorial process.</li><li> Work with program staff and the media team to coordinate press outreach and avoid overlap and scheduling conflicts. </li></ul><ul><li>Provide expert media-relations advice to program staff, including media training. </li><li>Track relevant local, national and international news and seek ways to become part of the news cycle.</li><li>Act as a public spokesperson as needed.</li><li>Expand and refine the Center’s existing communications materials, including the website and regular publications.</li><li>Carry out other media-relations work as needed. </li></ul> This position reports directly to the media director and works closely with the directors and teams of the Center’s Climate Law Institute and other programs. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS <ul><li> Bachelor’s degree.</li><li> Five to 10 years of experience as a professional communicator, including journalism or advocacy work. </li><li> Exceptional writing ability. The root causes of extinction, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change and ruthless wildlife exploitation are also the driving forces of systematic oppression and the marginalization and exploitation of many human identities. The Center’s Internal JEDAI Director will work with our People Services team, our JEDAI committee and leadership to ensure justice, equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion continue at the center.  Position Overview The Director of Internal JEDAI (DoJEDAI), will provide strategic and creative leadership to advance the Center’s inclusion, equity and diversity goals. As a member of the Leadership Team, the DoJEDAI will engage collaboratively across the organization to develop, monitor and report on actionable and measurable JEDAI goals, strategies, and metrics in alignment with organizational development goals. The DoJEDAI will support the development and implementation of proactive and integrative policies, strategies and practices that lead to a more inclusive work culture, a broad base of diversity knowledge, support of affinity groups, and genuine inclusiveness. A successful candidate will use dynamic tools, continuous innovation and learning to reflect this in the workplace, the programs we carry out and our partnerships. They will serve as an institutional resource in areas of diversity, structural racism, justice, disability, ethnic and religious tolerance, equity, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression. The Director of Internal JEDAI, will also actively support the People Services department in their role of improving recruitment and hiring. This will include hands-on recruitment and creatively strategizing more efficient and effective ways reaching diverse candidates. This highly strategic and facilitative position requires proven experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion training, coaching and an understanding of institutional and structural oppression as experienced in the U.S. The position also requires project management skills including research, planning, organizing, developing, and participating in and/or leading cross cultural/functional teams. In addition, this role requires experience in collaborative problem solving.
